Meeting Time/Place

All meetings are in ECCR 1B55. Lectures are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11:00-11:50AM. Recitations are on Tuesday at 11:00-11:50AM.

Office Hours

My office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:00-10:00AM.

Text

We will be using Calculus by Hughes-Hallett (Wiley, ISBN 978-0470-08914-9), 5th edition. This text is a bit different than some other calculus books. Compared to popular books like Stewart’s, this text will seem less formal and more focused on understanding and applications. That being said, my experience is that the motivation for understanding and applications somewhat dies in the latter chapters of the text. I’ll be posting some notes here to compensate for that from time to time.

Calculator

You will need a calculator for this course. Something at least as capable as a TI-83 will be sufficient. A TI-89 or TI-92, or whatever the new version is, would be even more beneficial as they have computer algebra systems and can help take derivatives and integrals, and so on.

Written Homework

Written homework will be done in groups of 2-3. (If you have not formed a group within the first week of class, contact me and I will place you in a group. Also, groups may change as students add or drop the course.) Everyone in each group should be working on the problems and sharing ideas, and each person has a specific job on each assignment which shall rotate throughout the semester:

  • Scribe: the person who physically writes the assignment.
  • Reporter: the person who writes a cover page for the assignment.
  • Clarifier: the person who ensures that everyone in the group understands the assignment and solutions.

The cover page for the assignment should list who did which job on that assignment, describe how the week went, and discuss any disagreements (on solutions, on workload, etc.). It is not unlikely that written homework problems will appear later in the course (quizzes, exams, etc.), so it is very important that everyone in your group understands each problem and each problem’s solution.

Midterms

Bring your CU student ID to midterms and the final exam. The midterms and final exam are coordinated with other calculus sections and are in different places. Once those rooms are determined, information will be posted here. Do not miss the midterms or the final! If you have a valid excuse for not being at a midterm or exam (the interpretation of this is left to me), this is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Quizzes

I give a short quiz before every lecture. These quizzes are intended to be definition or theorem statements related to reading of the text, and should be relatively straightforward. I do this in multivariable calculus courses because it is a simple fact that we cannot cover all of the material in lectures. YOU MUST READ THE BOOK IN THIS COURSE. (That doesn’t mean that you must understand everything the first time you read it. I don’t expect you to completely understand the material before lectures or before you do the homework.) The calendar tells you which sections will be covered on specific days, and I expect students to read the text.

Quizzes will be given in recitation as well.

Undergraduate Mathematics Resource Center

The UMRC (math help lab) is located in MATH175 and is open on Monday through Thursday at 9:00AM-5:00PM, and on Friday at 9:00AM-2:00PM.
